Sacramento nursing home employees suspended after demanding PPE


Employees at a Sacramento nursing home were suspended Wednesday when they refused to go to work unless they were issued proper personal protective equipment, PPE, during their shifts.”We were standing up for what is correct and what’s right for us,” said a certified nursing assistant who did not want to be identified. The employee is worried about, what she says, is a lack of PPE. She said that concern got her suspended from her job at the Windsor Care Center in Sacramento.”They expect us to use the yellow disposable gown all day from starting shift until we leave — that’s infection,” she said. “That infection, we’re passing it over and over again to one resident to another, and we’re bringing it to our family.”The employee said workers are supposed to change their mask, gloves and gown every time they come in contact with a new patient. The employee said they’ve been getting new patients every day — some who are recovering from the coronavirus.When a handful of certified nursing assistants at the Windsor Care Center decided to protest by showing up at work but refusing to go in until they got the proper PPE, they were issued a letter by the care home’s administrator Suzanne Peck.The letter from Peck said, in part:”I have been advised that your refusal to work and the resulting abandonment of patients is unlawful. We have been, and are, willing to continue to discuss how to resolve your PPE concerns. Walking off the job is not an acceptable way to handle those concerns…”You must report for your scheduled shift no later than 10:30 AM this morning. If you fail to do so, we will have no choice but to take disciplinary action, up to and including the termination of your employment.”KCRA 3 reached out to Peck for a comment. She issued us the following statement:”The facility follows all CDC guidelines and has had no cases of COVID-19. While it is unfortunate that some employees refused to fulfill their patient care responsibilities (Wednesday), we will continue to provide for the health and safety of our employees and residents.”The employee said everyone who was suspended wants to work, but they’re all scared and just want to know that they and their families are going to be protected.”That paycheck. I need it to feed my family, but I’m also not going to put my family, my family’s health in danger,” she said.Peck said the nursing home has been in constant communication with the staff and she reports to the California Department of Health every day.
