Calhoun County leads in new business growth | News, Sports, Jobs


GRANTSVILLE — Calhoun County leads the state for the number of new businesses for the month of April, according to the office of the West Virginia Secretary of State.

Six were registered in the county in April with the total of new businesses in the state reaching 780 for the month.

According to Calhoun Commission President Chip Westfall, new business doesn’t come into the county very often.

The county increased from 167 to 173 which is a 3.59 percent growth.

Pleasants County also showed an increase with the registration of three new businesses.

During a year timeframe, Calhoun County gained 26 new businesses, a growth of 13.82 percent, according to the business statistics database.

Within the same timeframe, Doddridge had a substantial increase of 34 businesses and a 10.94 percent growth.

For the state overall, West Virginia received a 9.01 percent increase in business registrations for the previous 12-month period.

According to the business status database, for the month of April, Wood County had 25 new businesses, Doddridge County had three, Tyler County had two, Wirt County had one, Ritchie County had three, Jackson County had five and Roane County had one.
